Skills for Nurse Resume

Nursing resumes need to show clinical competence, credentials, and the ability to work under pressure. This guide outlines skill clusters and bullet examples that resonate with hiring managers in hospitals, clinics, and other settings.

60-second answerUpdated September 2026
Nurse resume skills in 2026: what gets you screened in (the 5-point short version)
  1. Put licensure and certifications at the top: RN or LPN with state and compact status, BLS, ACLS, PALS, plus specialty credentials (CCRN, CEN, OCN). These are hard filters and an expired date is an automatic rejection.
  2. Name your clinical setting and acuity precisely — med-surg, ICU, ED, telemetry, L&D, oncology — along with bed count and typical nurse-to-patient ratio. Nursing experience is judged by setting far more than by years.
  3. State your EMR by name: Epic, Cerner (Oracle Health), Meditech, Allscripts. Charting-system familiarity is a genuine cost line for the employer and is routinely searched.
  4. Quantify quality and safety outcomes in the language of the unit: CLABSI and CAUTI rates, falls, HCAHPS, readmissions, medication-error reduction. These are the metrics nurse managers are themselves measured on.
  5. Include the leadership and precepting work — charge nurse shifts, preceptorship, rapid response, committee membership, evidence-based practice projects. It is how a staff nurse resume signals readiness for the next level.
